3 cd -  Esoteric - 2019

Boxset with three cardboard-sleeve cd's and a small poster with tracks and band information. Nothing new or added. Alive and Well is the single-disc version, not the 2010 version with the extra, second disc.

  1. Bundles
  2. Softs
  3. Alive and Well Recorded in Paris

2 cd - Floating World - 2018

A cheap two disc set. CD1 is Soft Machine Live in Paris, but not the complete version. Omitted are the last four tracks of that set. CD2 is a compilation of a compilation, mostly tracks from Canterburried Sounds. In fact the two discs are so uneven in music quality and band-sound, that it is as least as strange as the picture of Lyn Dobson on the cover. He doesn't play on any of the tracks. So yes, they (Floating World that is) did it (wrong) again. Plus minus.

1. Plain Tiffs
2. All White
3. Slightly All the Time
4. Drop
5. M.C
6. Out-Bloody-Rageous

12. Summertime

4cd - Voiceprint/Floating World - 2015

A curious combination of sets: various band incarnations, various record label sources. But, they did it again: nothing new herein if you have the other discs allready. Worth mentioning: there is a wrong number on the side of the box:  BLUE 162. The complete set, discs and backside of the box has number: SOFT 162...

Disc 1 and the first four tracks on disc two also appear as 'Live in Paris'. Thus making it the third time the concert is released (One Way Records and Cuneiform before). Tracks 5-7 appear on 'Backwards' (previous released by Cuneiform). Mark Charig is mentioned as trumpet player, but that's a (big) mistake; he is not even present on these three tracks.  Disc three was released before as 'Noisette' (another one from Cuneiform). Disc four is 'Drop' and the only disc released before by another record company: MoonJune.

2cd - Secret Records - 2014

Once again an awkward compilation with wrong picture on the front. Do they ever learn? Cd1 1-4 are home recordings (Canterburied Sounds); 5-8, 11, 12 the always present studio recordings from 1967 and tracks 9-10 are once again from Middle Earth:  Disc 2 has the Iowa USA live concert (1-4) and - how surprising - the Paradiso concert (5-6) and ends with yet another familiar concert (7-11) from Fairfields Hall. All tracks have been released before and some with even better sound quality. As the band told you already: 'save yourself'

5cd box - Sony - Europe, 2010

A box  and 5 cd's in mini-lp replica sleeve, but it isn't that simple. The replicas are very poor, there are no gatefolds and there is no information at all. The sound is OK, it the same as the most recent re-releases from Sony, If you like a (very) cheap set...

  1. Third
  2. Fourth
  3. Fifth
  4. 'Six' Album
  5. Seven

2cd - Dejavu Retro - Europe, 2005

A curious collection of tracks, sometimes even in three different versions. Disc two has nothing do to with Soft Machine at all, yes, once they were in Soft Machine, but The Story of Soft Machine? No!

2cd - Ambitions - Europe, 2005

Ambitions, what's in a name? But what their actual ambition is? Rip the innocent? This set has a very ugly cover and the sound equals that of bootlegs. Avoid if you can.

cd - Elite - UK, 1991

A very awkward collection of tracks from Third, Fourth, Fifth and 'Six' Album. The Sixties cover shows the pre-Soft Machine band with Daevid Allen and has nothing to do with the tracks on this record. Elite? Hm!

  2. Teeth
  3. Chloe And The Pirates

3lp boxset with booklet - EMI, UK, 1977

During the ten-year period covered by this three-album anthology, twelve out of the fifteen Soft Machine incarnations to date recorded a single for Polydor, two sides of demos which later surfaced on the French label Byg, an unreleased single, two albums on Probe, numerous tapes for the BBC, five albums on CBS (including two doubles) and a couple for Harvest.
These statistics, in all their convoluted splendour, provide evidence of why compilation albums which purport to tell the whole story merely relate the part which applies to the record label in question. I believe the term is 'licensing difficulties'.
For this reason, 'Triple Echo' has taken some time assemble but, as a result, can claim with justification to be a real chronological history of Soft Machine's recordings, several of them rare. Furthermore, it proves a perspective which the sum total of their work - by its sheer bulk and, in some cases, unavailability - is unable to do.

The contents are their own most effective recommendation, tracing as they do the progress of an ever-shifting entity whose music has been determined, not by an enslaving regard for fame and formula, but by the inclinations of the players it comprises at any given time.

Soft Machine have often been erratic but rarely less than fascinating, and at certain inspired moments, may of them represented here, they provide the kind of thrill which you can't find anywhere else. Look no further!

Inner Sleeve notes by Al Clark

A great compilation of old and new tracks. A real treat for the fan and even so a little bit more by adding a booklet on lp- format with many new pictures and a fully detailed family tree. If you have a record-player and like playing records and you like Soft Machine as well, go for it!

lp - Hör Zu Black label - Germany, 1970

The album is a very strange one; tracks from Volume One and Volume Two, but totally mixed-up. Hör Zu means 'listen'. Maybe you should listen to other albums instead.
